The ‘Vara Lakshmi Vratha’ is celebrated on the Friday before the full moon in the Tamil Month ‘Aadi/Avani’ which corresponds to the English months of July-August. It is a festival to worship the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. Varalakshmi is one who grants boons (Varam).
Varalakshmi Vratam is performed by married woman for the wellbeing of all the family members. It is believed that worshipping Goddess Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure, and Strength.
Varalakshmi Viratham is followed by their family traditions passed on to them from generations to generations.
On Thursday a day before the puja clean the house in and out and make makkolam/izhai kolam at the entrance of the house and inside the house where you will do the puja. Keep everything ready for the next day’s puja.
Take a silver or bronze kalash. Clean the kalash and put sandanam and kumkumam on the kalash.
Put the following inside the kalash.
Rice, betel leaves with pakku, manjal, lemon, banana and coin.
Now insert mavilai/mango leaves around the opening of the kalash.
Take a small coconut and apply manjal(haldi), Kumkum on it and keep it on the kalash.
Tie the LAKSHMI MUHAM around the coconut,decorate with bangles and jewels.
Place the kalash on a silver or bronze plate filled with rice.
Now decorate the mandap with mavilai(Mango leaveas), vazhai maram (Planatain tree), flowers etc.
Keep ready the following for the Puja:
Flowers, malai, coconut, banana, betle leaves and nut, haldi powder, agarbatti, chandan, kumkum,
Sambrani(doop), vilakku, thiri, oil, ghee, cows milk, saradu(yellow thread) and fruits.
Friday morning keep the plate in which kalash is kept on a wooden blank(palaha) on which you had put rangoli/kolam.
Keep the kalash at the entrance of the house facing east. Light the vilakku and keep near the kalash.
Do pujai with atchadai and flower. Do neivedyam with vetrilai, pakku, fruit. Light kalpuram. Then do Arti. After arti bring the kalash singing Welcome song of Lakshmi and keep in the mandap which has been decorated.
First make small Ganesh with Haldi powder. Do puja to the Ganesh(Pillyar) Do neivedyam with Vetrilai Pakku and fruit.
Then do the Varalakshmi Puja. Tie the yellow thread around the wrist. Take blessings from the elders at home.
For neivedyam, payasam, vadai, paruppu kozakattai, tengai kozukattai,ulundu kozukattai and ellu kozhakatai idly with raw rice are made.
PUNARPUJAI
The next morning Punarpujai is done with neivedyam. In the evening ladies from neighbours and relatives are called for vetrilai pakku. In the night move the varalakshmi from that place towards west
And keep the kalasam inside the container where u keep rice. Keep the coin inside the cash box.
Use the rice and coconut.
